John Singer Sargant watercolors

The American artist John Singer Sargant certainly could be described as a 'loose' watercolorist. Although primarily known for his oils, his watercolors continue to inspire Artists. You can see details of his other work on his Wikipedia page. I am of course, mainly interested in his watercolors, and I include a couple here.

Complete Loose watercolor video in 2 parts

In this video you will see in detail how to paint a loose landscape in watercolor using my techniques.
The painting below is the end result, scroll down to see the videos. I just painted and spoke about my thought processes, I hope it is useful. It is based on a photo on Paint My Photo **Note** It is possible to view it in high resolution depending on your connection speed. Choose 720p from bottom right of the videos.

Loose Artists on the 'net'

Perhaps that should be 'Artists loose on the net!' anyway the fact is sometimes you find things only by recommendation. A member on idrawandpaint told me about Eric weigardt as his style seemed similar to mine, how right they are! I can see we have a very similar love for the flow of paint, you can see a gallery of his work here  and I have added one of his venice paintings on here as well.

Loose Watercolor Inspirations

It is sometimes easy to think that the popular loose styles of painting today are something new. In a way they are, once you start to talk about abstract elements and enjoyment of just the mix and flow of pigment on paper. However no one will tell me that Joseph William Turner
was not someone who enjoyed the abstract qualities we enjoy today. His work and techniques would have been to create the chiaroscuro of nature. His watercolors are stunning examples of subtle tone and glazing. I will have more to say about Turner, and other Artists, in future posts. For now, enjoy a few examples of his watercolors.

Time lapse video of my Glen Coe painting

Just want to see how my videos from youtube look embedded here. I just used a Kolinsky sable for this painting, very loose and free.

An Example of my Loose Watercolors

This loose interpretation of St Marks in Venice is an example of the way I have been painting recently. For me , watercolor is about the free expression with the medium. I will be expanding on the processes required to 'loosen up' in this blog.

First Post on my new Blog!

This is where I am going to document my discoveries and adventure in loose watercolor painting. English readers, yes I have decided to go completely over to the American spelling. Hey it makes sense, the 'U' is silent so what's the point?
